Apollo

An early 18th century figure of Apollo by Pieter Van Baurscheit the Elder signed PVB IF. The standing god holding a posy of flowers, a cloth draped over his arms and shoulders.

Height: 180cm

Jan Pieter van Baurscheit the Elder
(Wormersdolf 1669 - Antwerp 1728)

One of the most notable scupltors of the Low Countries in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, a pupil of Pieter Scheermakers, Baurscheit’s works can be found in the Rijksmuseum, Catalogue Nos. 360 - 363.
Baurscheit had studios in Antwerp and the body of
his work consists of garden sculpture, vases and figures in marble and sandstone. His figures are mainly of
classical gods such as Apollo (left). Whilst he is
chiefly known for his instantly recognisable groups of
squabbling putto (opposite page) he invariably produced in allegorical sets. He also produced portrait busts and
ecclesiastical works.
